Is my address on Companies House? How to check every document

Is my address on Companies House? If you've held a company role, probably in at least one filing, and often one you've forgotten. Here's where it tends to hide and how to check every document.

If you've ever been a director, secretary, shareholder or person with significant control, your home address may be on the public register. The quickest honest answer is that you have to open the documents and read them, because the officer page doesn't show everything inside each filing.

This guide covers where a home address tends to appear, how to run the check yourself for free, and where it gets painful.

Is my address on Companies House? Where it can appear

Most people think of the appointment form and stop there. In practice an address can turn up in several places, and each one needs its own look.

DocumentTypical eraWhat it can show
Incorporation documentsAnySubscriber and first officer addresses, plus the first registered office
Officer appointment formsAnyThe address given for the role
Annual returnsOlder filingsOfficer details, and shareholder lists with addresses in some returns
Change-of-details formsAnyA new address if you updated it
Registered office historyAnyA home used as the registered office
PSC filingsSince 2016Notification or change details, depending on what was entered
Paper filingsOlderAddresses written in presenter or signature boxes

Two things make this messier than it sounds.

Before October 2009, directors' forms asked for a usual residential address, and that was published. Since then the public record is meant to carry a service address, and the residential address is held back. Our director service address guide explains the difference.

The second is human. Plenty of people typed their home in as the service address, or wrote it in a presenter box on a paper form, and nothing flagged it.

How to find your address on Companies House yourself

The register is free to search. You'll use the official Find and update company information service.

  1. 01Search your name as an officerUse the officer search and pick out the entries that are you. Appointment dates and the month and year of birth help separate you from people with the same name.
  2. 02Open your appointments listThis lists every company where you're a current or resigned officer. Include companies that are now dissolved.
  3. 03Open each company's filing historyGo through the whole list for each company, not just the first page. You're looking for every document that names you.
  4. 04Open every document imageRead the full page. Scanned paper forms are images, so you'll be reading them by eye, including handwriting.
  5. 05Write down what you findNote the company, document type, registration date and what's shown. That list is what you'll need if you decide to ask for removal.

This also answers the other things people search for, like how to check my details on Companies House or what a Companies House personal information search turns up. The service searches by name, so it finds your officer entries and leaves you to read the filings behind them.

Why the manual check gets slow

For a single company set up recently, this is a short job.

It's a different story if you've got several companies, an old company with a decade of filings, or a dissolved company you'd forgotten. A busy filing history can run to dozens of documents, and each is a separate image to open and read.

The old scanned forms are the hard part. Handwriting, stamps and faint photocopies don't search well, and an address in a signature or presenter box is easy to miss.

Checking yourself vs our free scan

Both routes use the same public register. The difference is who reads the documents.

Checking yourself

  • Free, using the Find and update company information service
  • You open every filing history and every document
  • You read old scanned paper forms by eye
  • Time depends on how many companies you've had
  • You decide which documents to act on

Our free scan

  • Free to run, with no document-by-document reading
  • Reads every document since 2003
  • Reads handwriting on old scanned forms
  • Results shown as postcode districts only
  • Lists the documents that carry your details

You can run it from our free scan. We show postcode districts only (something like LS6) so the results page doesn't become another place your full address sits.

If you'd rather see the process before you use it, the full removal guide shows what happens after the scan.

What to do once you've found it

Write down each document and its registration date. Documents registered on or after 1 January 2003 can qualify for removal, and the fee is £34 per document paid to Companies House.

The dates that matter

  1. Before Oct 2009Forms asked for a usual residential addressOlder appointment forms can carry a home address.
  2. 1 Jan 2003Earliest documents that can qualify
  3. TodayDocuments on the register stay public until removed

Companies House decides every application, so list only documents that actually show your details.

Questions

Is my home address public on Companies House?

If you've ever been a director, secretary, shareholder or person with significant control of a UK company, your home address may be public in at least one filing. It's most likely in older documents, or anywhere you typed your home address instead of a service address. The only way to be sure is to read the filings themselves.

Does the Companies House officer page show my home address?

The officer page shows the correspondence (service) address given for each role, which for many people is not their home. It doesn't show what's written inside the individual PDF filings, so a home address can still sit in a form that the officer page doesn't summarise.

Can I search Companies House by my name to find my address?

Yes, you can search officers by name on the Find and update company information service and open the appointments list for each match. Common names return many results, so check the company names and appointment dates before you open anything.

How long does it take to check every filing myself?

It depends on how many companies you've been involved with and how old they are. One recent company can take minutes. Several companies with years of paper filings can take an afternoon, because every scanned document has to be opened and read.

Is it free to look at Companies House documents?

Yes. Searching the register and viewing document images is free on the Find and update company information service. The £34 fee only applies if you later apply to have your details removed, and it's charged per document.

What do I do if I find my address?

Note the document type and its registration date, then check whether it qualifies for removal. Documents registered on or after 1 January 2003 can qualify, and Companies House decides each application.
