Used your home address as your registered office? How to get it off the register
If your home address was ever your company's registered office, it's on the public record, and there's a route to remove it. What you do first depends on whether the home address registered office on Companies House is still live.

Using your home as the registered office is a common way a personal address ends up on the public register. Companies House lets you apply to remove it, but the order of events matters, and one wrong filing gets the whole application rejected.
The short version: if the home is still the registered office, change it with form AD01 first. If you've already moved it, list the original filing that set the address, never the AD01 that moved it. If the company is dissolved, wait 6 months after dissolution.
Home address as registered office on Companies House: which situation are you in?
Three situations come up again and again. Work out which one is yours before you touch a form.
Route your registered office case
Is your home address still the company's registered office today?
Yes: Change the registered office with AD01 first (situation 1), then apply.
No: Go to the next question.
Has the company been dissolved?
Yes: Wait 6 months after the dissolution date, then apply (situation 3).
No: The company is live and you've already moved the office. List the original filing that set your home address (situation 2).
Situation 1: change the registered office from your home address
Companies House won't remove the address a live company currently uses as its registered office. You'll need to change the registered office from your home address first, using form AD01 or the online service.
The new address has to be an "appropriate address". Since 4 March 2024, companies must keep one at all times. Companies House's test is whether a document addressed to the company, delivered there by hand or by post, would be expected to reach a person acting for the company. PO Boxes don't qualify.
That leaves you with three realistic options:
- A business premises you or the company already use.
- A registered office service, where a provider lets you use their address and handles the post.
- Your accountant's or agent's address, if they agree and it meets the same test.
The new address also has to be in the same part of the UK as the company's registration (England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland). Companies House doesn't charge for the change online, but it only takes effect once the registrar has registered it.
- 01Pick an appropriate addressChoose somewhere post for the company will reliably reach someone acting for it. A registered office service is the usual answer for home-based founders.
- 02File the AD01File online using the company's authentication code, or send the paper AD01. You'll confirm the new address is appropriate.
- 03Wait for it to be registeredCheck the company's overview page on Companies House and confirm the new address now shows.
- 04Apply to remove the home addressList the original filing that set your home as the registered office, pay £34 per document, and send the SR01.
One more catch. If your home address is also the company's single alternative inspection location (SAIL), GOV.UK says you'll need to change that before completing the SR01.
Situation 2: you've already moved the registered office
If the registered office has already moved, you can apply to remove the old home address. GOV.UK has allowed this for a home address used as a former registered office since 27 January 2025.
This is where the mistake happens. People look at the register, see the filing that changed the address, and list that one. It's the wrong document.
Don't list this
- The AD01 that moved the registered office to a new address
- Any later filing that only shows the new address
- A filing you can't confirm shows your home address
List this
- The incorporation document, if it set your home as the office
- An earlier AD01 that moved the office to your home
- The original filing that gave your home address as the registered office
An example: Northgate Studio Ltd
Here's a fictional company to show how it works in practice. Alex Morgan incorporates Northgate Studio Ltd from a spare room in LS6, then moves to an office three years later.
Northgate Studio Ltd (fictional)
- 2016IncorporationHome address in LS6 is given as the registered office.
- 2019AD01 filedRegistered office moves to a rented office. The home address is now a former registered office.
- TodaySR01 applicationAlex lists the 2016 incorporation document, not the 2019 AD01.
If the home address also appears on other filings, such as an appointment or a confirmation statement, those can go on the same application. Our guide to how to complete SR01 shows where each document goes. If you're not sure which filings hold your address, run the free scan and we'll list them.
What if I need a replacement address?
Not for this situation. Companies House only asks for a replacement address if you're a current serving officer. If your home was used only as a former registered office, you can leave that section blank, and Companies House then hides part of the address on the register rather than all of it. The exact portion that stays visible is Companies House's call, so we'd check the register after the application goes through.
If your home is also your current service address as a director, that's a separate issue. We cover it in director service address explained.
Situation 3: the company is dissolved
A dissolved company's filings stay on the register, including any that show your home as the registered office. You can still apply to remove the address, and you don't need a replacement address because the company no longer exists.
The one extra rule is timing. If your home was the registered office when the company was dissolved, wait 6 months after the dissolution date before you apply. List the same kind of document as in situation 2, the original filing that set your home as the registered office.
The full walkthrough is in removing your address from a dissolved company's records.
Registered office home address privacy: what stays public
| Situation | Change first? | Replacement address? |
|---|---|---|
| Home is the current registered office | Yes, AD01 | Only if it's also your current service address |
| Home was a former registered office | No | No |
| Company dissolved | No, wait 6 months | No |
Until you apply, anyone can see a registered office on the company's overview page and in the filing history, including the old documents. Companies House shows it as part of a free public service, and search engines pick it up.
Only documents registered on or after 1 January 2003 qualify for removal. Each document listed costs £34, paid before you apply. Our full guide to removing your home address from Companies House covers who can apply and what else you can remove.
Questions
Can I remove my home address if it's still my company's registered office?
Not while it's the current registered office. Companies House asks you to change the registered office address first using form AD01, and then apply to remove the home address from the old filings. The new address has to be an appropriate address under the company law changes that took effect on 4 March 2024.
Which document do I list if my home was a former registered office?
List the original filing that gave your home address as the registered office. That's usually the incorporation document, or an earlier change of registered office address. Don't list the AD01 that moved the registered office away, because Companies House rejects applications that do.
Do I need a replacement address if my home was only a former registered office?
No. Companies House only asks for a replacement address if you're a current serving officer whose home address is still your service address. If the home was only ever a former registered office, you can leave that section blank.
Can I remove my address from a dissolved company's registered office?
Yes, in most cases. If your home was the registered office when the company was dissolved, we'd wait 6 months after the dissolution date before applying. You don't need a replacement address because the company no longer exists.
Is there a fee to change a registered office address?
Companies House doesn't charge to change a registered office address online. The £34 per document fee applies to the SR01 application that removes your home address from the old filings, and it's paid separately.
