What information does Companies House show about directors?

What information does Companies House show about directors? A name, month and year of birth, nationality, country of residence, occupation and a service address, all public. The home address and full date of birth are held back, but older documents can still show them.

Companies House is a public register, so anyone can look up a director for free and read what's on their officer page. The short answer is that the page shows a fairly detailed profile, just not the two details people worry about most: the usual residential address and the day you were born.

The longer answer has a catch. The officer page is a summary, and the scanned documents in the filing history sit behind it. Those can show more, especially if they're old.

What's on a director's officer page today

Each officer page lists the roles a person holds or has held. Based on the fields in the Companies House public data API (the same data the page is built from), a current record carries:

GOV.UK confirms the headline items: the public information "includes your name, nationality, month and year of your date of birth", plus a service address that "can be the company's registered office or another address".

The service address is the one to understand. It's there so the register has somewhere to reach you, and it can be a business address. Our director service address guide covers how it works.

What Companies House keeps private

Two things sit on a private register that the public can't search:

That protection came with the Companies Act 2006, which separated the service address from the residential one. Forms from before October 2009 asked directors for a usual residential address and published it, so older filings can look very different from a modern record.

What older document images can show that the officer page doesn't

The filing history is where the surprises are. Every appointment form, annual return and change of details is stored as an image, and each one shows whatever was written on the day it was filed.

Two of those rows need a note.

On the day of birth, GOV.UK limits removal to documents filed before 10 October 2015, and only the day goes. The month and year stay. Our guide on removing a date of birth from Companies House shows which forms count.

On occupation, GOV.UK allows removal where stating it was required on the document. The details are in our occupation guide, and signatures have their own guide.

What a fictional older record looks like

Here's a made-up appointment form of the kind you'd find in a filing history. The details are invented, and the redactions show what a removal application targets.

A fictional 2008 appointment form. The company, name and nationality stay public. The redacted boxes are what an SR01 application can target, subject to Companies House's rules.

What people expect against what's actually public

What people often assume

  • Companies House shows my home address to anyone who searches
  • My full date of birth is on my officer page
  • Nothing on the register can be found by name
  • Once I've changed my details, the old ones are gone

What's actually public

  • The officer page shows your service address, which can be a business address
  • Only your month and year of birth appear on the officer page
  • Anyone can search officers by name and see every appointment
  • Old filings keep what they showed when filed, until removed

Does identity verification show up on the register?

Companies House has made identity verification compulsory for new directors and people with significant control from 18 November 2025, and it applies to existing directors with their next confirmation statement. The public data API now carries an identity_verification_details field, which includes fields such as the date identity was verified.

We couldn't find official wording that sets out exactly what the officer page shows to a visitor, so we'd rather not guess. Open a current officer page to see how it's displayed today. GOV.UK does say Companies House will publish a note against a name on the public register in the future where someone doesn't comply, so the display may change.

Other websites copy this data

The register is public, and a number of company information websites copy it. Removing a detail at source doesn't update those copies automatically. Our guide on removing your details from third-party company websites covers how to ask for updates once the source is fixed.

To see what's on your own records, start with is my address on Companies House or run our free scan, which reads every filing since 2003 and shows postcode districts only. The full process is on our remove your home address from Companies House page, and the SR01 form explained guide covers the application itself.

Questions

Is director information public in the UK?

Yes. Companies House publishes a director's name, month and year of birth, nationality, country of residence, occupation, service address and appointment dates for anyone to read, free of charge. The usual residential address and the full date of birth are held on a private register.

Can anyone see a director's date of birth on Companies House?

On the officer page, only the month and year. Older documents in the filing history can still show the full date of birth, particularly forms filed before 10 October 2015, so the day can be visible if you open those images.

Does Companies House show a director's home address?

The officer page shows the service address given for the role, which can be a business address. A home address can still appear on the filing history in two ways: someone typed it in as their service address, or an older form asked for the usual residential address and published it.

Does Companies House show if a director has verified their identity?

Verification is now compulsory for new directors and a requirement for existing ones. The public data does include an identity verification field, but we couldn't find official wording on exactly how the officer page displays it, so check the officer page itself. The ID document you used to verify isn't published.

Can I remove my nationality or country of residence from Companies House?

GOV.UK's removal service covers four things: home address, the day of your date of birth, signature and business occupation. Nationality, country of residence, your name and your month and year of birth stay on the register.

Who can see what Companies House holds on its private register?

Companies House says credit reference agencies and specified public authorities such as the police can receive the home address and full date of birth, under strict circumstances or where the law requires it. Members of the public can't see that register.
