Resigned as a director? Your address is still on Companies House

If you want to remove your address from Companies House after resigning, you can, but it takes an application. Resigning as a director or secretary ends your role and leaves the old filings exactly where they were.

Plenty of former directors assume their details went with them when they filed the resignation. They didn't.

You remove your address from Companies House after resigning by sending form SR01 for each document that shows it, at £34 per document. You don't need a replacement address, because that's only for people still serving. The rest of this guide covers what stays public and how to find it all.

What stays public after you resign

Four things typically remain on the register:

Companies House says a company's record stays on the public register after it closes, and for dissolved companies that's currently 20 years. It's also reviewing that. We cover the dissolved side in our guide on removing an address from a dissolved company.

A resigned director's paper trail

Here's a fictional example. Alex Morgan joins Northgate Studio Ltd as a director in 2014 and resigns two years later.

Fictional example: what each step leaves on the register

  1. Mar 2014AppointedAn AP01 is filed. This is usually where a home address first appears.
  2. Mar 2015Annual returnAn AR01 for that year lists officers and details.
  3. Jun 2015Moves houseA CH01 records the new address. Now two addresses are public.
  4. Mar 2016Second annual returnAnother year, another document to check.
  5. Aug 2016ResignsA TM01 is filed. The earlier documents are untouched.

Alex has left, but five documents are still searchable. Moving house made it worse, as every change of details adds another address to the trail.

Which documents show what?

Companies House publishes a list of documents it can suppress, with columns for address, signature, day of birth and occupation. It says the list is examples, not an exhaustive list. Here are the rows we can confirm from it.

TM01, TM02 and 288b aren't in the examples we checked, so open your own copy to see what it shows before you assume. The day of birth can only be removed from documents filed before 10 October 2015, which is why a 288a or 363a is treated differently from an AP01. For more on that, see our guide to removing your date of birth.

Do you need a replacement address after resigning?

That's the main practical difference between a former director's application and a current one. If you're still serving at any company, a replacement address is the next thing to sort. Our guide on director service addresses explains how that works.

How to find every company you were ever appointed to

Start with what Companies House lets you search for:

Name searches only go so far. Older paper filings can carry typos, and the same person can end up listed under more than one officer record. A free scan reads the filings themselves from 2003 onwards, including handwritten paper forms, and shows results as postcode districts only.

How to apply as a former director or secretary

  1. 01List the companies and the documentsFor each company, note the appointment form, any change of details and the annual returns that show your address, signature or day of birth.
  2. 02Leave the replacement address blankIf you've resigned from every role, or the companies are dissolved, you skip that section.
  3. 03Pay £34 per documentPay through GOV.UK Pay before applying and keep the payment reference. Without it the application is rejected.
  4. 04Complete the SR01 and email itFill in the form using our guide on [how to complete the SR01](/guides/how-to-complete-sr01) and send it to dsr@companieshouse.gov.uk. Companies House decides each document.

If you're new to the form, the SR01 explained covers what it's for. Five documents like Alex's come to £170 in Companies House fees. Through Address Erased it's £265 for five, including the £34 fee on each. The Companies House fee has no VAT, and our service fee includes VAT at 20%. Our removal service does the search and the form, with a refund on any document Companies House rejects.

Questions

Does my address come off Companies House when I resign as a director?

No. Resigning ends your role, but the filings you were named in stay on the public register. Your appointment form, the resignation filing and any annual returns from your time in office can all still be opened by anyone.

Do I need to give a replacement address if I've resigned?

No. GOV.UK says you only need a replacement address if you're a current serving officer and the home address is your service or correspondence address. If you're no longer a serving officer, or the company is dissolved, you skip that section of the form.

Can I ask the company to remove my address after I resign?

The company can't take filings off the register. It can file a correction for some errors, but removing your personal details from documents already on the register is done by you applying to Companies House on form SR01.

How do I find every company I've ever been a director of?

Search your name on the Companies House register and open the officer appointments list, then check for name variations, maiden names and older address spellings. Name searches miss paper-era filings, so a person-level scan of the filings themselves catches more.

Is a TM01 the same as the form that shows my home address?

Not usually. The TM01 records that your appointment ended, and the home address generally sits on the appointment form (AP01 or the older 288a) and on later changes of details. Open each document to see what it actually shows.

Is it worth applying if I resigned years ago?

In most cases, yes, because the filings from those years are still searchable. Each document costs £34 to suppress, so many people start with the ones that show a home address.
